This Is/NotSanta Barbara > This Is/Not Santa Barbara

Lived in Santa Barbara from 1986 until 1991. During my time there I was continually hearing that we all lived in paradise, and, indeed it was a very nice place to live. You couldn't ask for better weather, unless you like rain. However, it was an expensive place to live. Many of those who talked about paradise lived in tiny rooms within tiny apartments, and some had two jobs to pay for it all. The ultimate irony for me was that there was a freeway running right through the center of town. There was an entire, and apparently invisible, world that existed around and under the roadway and overpasses. As I created these images and showed them around, a common response was the exclamation, "That's not Santa Barbara!" I began to realize that it is possible for many people to drive on the road daily and not actually see it, or what is around it!
